We recently needed a gorgeous floral statement in our dining room but didn’t want to break the bank getting it. So we solicited help from a friend—and one of our favorite floral designers—to teach us a few tricks on how to accomplish our goal for under $20 using store bought orchid plants and items we already had at home.
Items needed for our project:
Two Orchid Plants (we bought ours at Trader Joe’s for under $10 each)
Large Chic Bowl or Vase
Spanish Moss
River Rock
Yesterday’s Newspaper
Small Plate
Canola Oil
Paper Towels
Time: 15 minutes
Find a small plate that you can sit your two plants on inside your chosen bowl/vase in order to stabilize your orchid plants (as needed).
Perch the orchids on the plate inside your bowl.
Surround plants with wadded newspaper to ensure that your flowers stay in place.
Place rocks strategically on top of the stabilizing newspaper.
Cover newspaper and rocks with moss.
Place a few rocks artfully on top of the moss.
Replace the ugly stabilizing sticks and “hair clips” supporting the orchid blooms and replace with curly willow branches and stabilize blooms to the willow with green twist ties or raffia.
Tie off blooms and clip off tie selvage.
Dampen a paper towel with canola oil.
Rub moist paper towel on each leaf to clean off the dirt, leaving the orchid leaves shiny.
Water each week by placing three ice cubes at base of orchid plants.
Voila!
Love it!
