We’d like to thank Fox Fodder Farms and Design Sponge for inspiring this dialogue. As We Live and Eat is our lifestyle brand that shares our daily endeavors: Photos of our dogs, interior design, decorative arts, culinary efforts, and inspirational images. We’re an openly gay couple that refrains from being overtly political on our media channels. But #AltonSterling, #PhilandroCastile, #SandraBland are lives. They, like us, are Americans.
We didn’t think twice about posting images of Turkey, France, and Pakistan when terrorism struck. Our hearts also broke when one man murdered numerous #LGBT citizens in Orlando. And in our private lives, we talk openly about the importance of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. So today it seems odd to post pretty pictures and act like none of this is happening.
Just four days ago everyone posted images of the American flag. Posts about freedom and how lucky we are to live in this country. Yet, our freedom also rests on the backs of African American soldiers who risk their lives for us. These men and women who fight for our freedoms; but, they have a 90% chance of getting profiled and pulled over before we do. So today, it just seems odd to post pretty pictures and act like none of this is happening.
We never have to worry about wearing a hoodie, a dangling license plate, or expired tabs. In fact, we have never worried about being harmed by police. It never crosses our mind. We have the privilege of appearing white. It gives us access to better lawyers, better jobs, and most of all, the freedom of fear. So today, it just seems odd to post pretty pictures and act like none of this is happening.
All of this is happening and we must act. Call your local official, congressional representative, police chief, mayor, et. al. Ask them what they are doing to ensure that all Americans remain safe. This is not a police problem, it’s a community problem. Municipalities must invest in their police force through de-escalation and anti-bias training. We want peace for all Americans.
